Question:

Vice principal, I heard our teacher said you often go mountain climbing in Dakeng in all weathers, right?

Answer:

Yes. I often go swimming after dinner in the evening about four times a week. On holidays, I would go mountain climbing and take place on schedule regardless of weather changes.

Question:

What is the main purpose of the mountain climbing?

Answer:

The main purpose of the mountain climbing is for the health and to train my feet strong. As you always see I climb stairs instead of taking the elevator except for the visiting or special cases.  For the students’ safety, the school prohibits the children from running in the school areas. I always grasp the chance to run upstairs and foot locker downstairs when I supervise the classes to train my heart and feet. The reason why many old people can’t walk is because their feet get week or deteriorate. Therefore, if you do exercise often, it is good for your health. I am used to looking for the mountains even abroad when I go traveling. Those are not bit, but they will be the cozy ones to let me sweat.  I still recalled one time I went sightseeing to the Rocky Mountains in Canada; there was just a mountain beside the hotel I stayed. Hence I invited several people to go mountain climbing after our tour group was dismissed. As long as I see the mountains, I would be happy and feel excited.

Question:

Whom do you usually go with? When do you go mountain climbing mostly?

Answer:

I would go mountain climbing with those who are interest in it, not restricted to the friends. Of course, I often go mountain climbing with my wife most of the time. Because her physical strength is not as good as mine, so I would choose the lower and less steep mountain nearby the city for her. Because she doesn’t walk as fast as I, so I usually go there at sunset. My way of the mountain climbing is to run back and forth. When I run up to the top, I would return when I don’t see her. Just like this way to run back and forth. The scenery of the sunset is different from the morning. When I just served at Yu-Jen in the beginning, I used to go mountain climbing about five and went to work after that. Later I began to go mountain climbing in the evening gradually. I almost went mountain climbing more during the winter and summer vacation before being a vice principal.

Question:

I was told that you often came across Yu-Jen students, right?

Answer:

In fact, I came across them once in a while. Most students would greet me when we encountered. It was a big surprise when we met in the mountains. I was delighted.  I could meet my students whatever the walking trail I hiked.

Question:

Excuse me. How many years have you gone mountain climbing?

Answer:

I have gone mountain climbing almost thirty years but not the big mountains such as Taiwan’s Top 100 (peaks over 3000 meters.)  It is because that you must prepare well and have enough physical strength. Therefore, you had better go to the small mountains at least four times a week and increase the quantity gradually to practice more. I often saw the hikers carried a heavy pack to go mountain climbing for training their feet and weight lifting, some of who were lifeguards. Sometimes I even saw some people cook and stay at night in the pavilion of Mt.Touke. In fact, I don’t like this because the mountain should be left for the offspring. If many people do this way, then Mt.Touke would be polluted soon. That is not good.

Question:

Vice principal, you have climbed Mt.Touke for more than thirty years. Are the walking tails apparently different from before?

Answer:

Three decades ago, the paths were all made of lumber. But they would be decayed after several years. The decayed wooden trails would be rebuilt. When there were more budgets from the government, there would be a substantial repair. If not, the walking trails would be repaired section by section; therefore, some of which were broken. Walking Trail No.3 changes a lot. I still remembered that the stones were slippery after the day of the 921 earthquake. There was still aftershock afterwards. Hence, I returned on the half way because there were no roads anymore. Now the government has already rebuilt anyway.

Question:

What walking trail do you hike mostly? Why?

Answer:

At present, I mostly hike Walking Trail No.2 and No.4. And, I often go to Guanyin Mountain with my wife. I often go Walking Trail No.2 because there are a few children  and less noisy there.  In addition, the lower mountain is uncleaner, so I always like to get there after raining for the less dust. Therefore, don’t take children to lower mountains, or they would breathe the dirt air easily. Most walking tails are wooden ones, but children fit to walk the cement path such as Walking Trail No.9.

Question:

Whic walking trail is the msot tiring? Which one is the most relaxing?

Answer:

Hiking to the entrance of Walking Trail No.4 from Walking Trail No.9 and Jhongjheng camp area is the most relaxing way. How tired you hike on the walking trail depends on how long you hiked. The longer, the more tired. There are several steep walking trails such as Walking Trail No.2, No.3 and No.4. There is a steeper slope on each trail. Generally speaking, Walking Trail No.4 is the hardest because it takes two and half an hour. Some people would have knee problems for hiking. In fact, it is because they don’t do exercise more, so do the muscles. People should last for hiking. I am already sixty, but I have no problems to race with the students.

Question:

What is the most special walking trail from your point of view? Why?

Answer:

In my opinion, Walking Trail No.4 is the most special because you can hear the birds sing and smell the flowers radiate their fragrance from Jhongjheng camp area. The government also established a butterfly remediation area, a bird watching area and Macaque park of course. If I have time, I like Walking Trail No.4 best. Therefore, I will spend about twenty minutes driving there and about one hour walking, so it wastes time. If I don’t have time, I will go Walking Trail No.2, go to Heisong pavilion. After that, I will walk to Mt.Touke when I have enough time. You must spend two and half an hour to three hours walking from Walking Trail No.4 to Mt.Touke.

Question:

Which walking trail abounds in ecology the most?

Answer:

Walking Trail No.5 abounds in the most diverse ecological species and the followings are Walking Trail No.3 and No.4, respectively. Walking Trail No.4 has the most kinds of birds. It’s not proper to go Walking Trail No.3 in summer because the shade of trees becomes less after being destroyed by the 921 earthquake. It’s too hot to get there. In fact, it’s all right to go climbing in the rain. The lumber of the walking trail doesn’t grow moss for many people step on it. The path is not slippery, either. The air is especially fresh after the rain. People had better not get there if there is thunder. I took two kids to go when it thundered and it was very frightening in the Heisong pavilion. It was an unforgettable, so I have never gone mountain climbing when there is thunder. In general, Walking Trail No.5 has the most kinds of plants.

Question:

If your friend visits here, which walking trail would you lead to? Why?

Answer:

It depends on the person. For kids, they fit to go Walking Trail No.9 and the intersection of Johngjheng camp area and Walking Trail No.4. There are Firefly and Butterfly Nursing Areas on the way, especially you can see the most kinds of birds on Walking Trail No.4. Dakeng’s Walking Trail is a good leisure place no matter you are going hiking or looking around. It is suitable for both adults and children.
