950904-determine the subject for the project

After the discussion, we decided that the project would focus on Dakeng Scenic Area. Why did we choose it as our subject? Because Dakeng Scenic Area is just like Yangmingshan National Park, and it is well known for its healthy footpaths and abundant local foods. A hot spring has been recently developed. Therefore, it has become a place for people to relax and enjoy the environment.  Our school is in the neighborhood Dakeng, so it is easy for us to do our research there. This is why we all agreed to this project.

950906-sign up “Ecotourism industry in Dakeng”

After I was selected as a member for the cyberfair, the first activity that I took part in was entitled “ecotourism industry in Dakeng.” The time was pressing and I was afraid of being too late to sign up. I gave our teacher the registration form and encouraged the others to hand in as well. After, our teacher signed us up on the spot. She said that there were openings for twelve people, but including our parents, we totaled fourteen. Finally, the host organization let all of us join. After signing up, our teacher gave us some guided information about Dakeng for our reference. She also introduced us a web page called “Beauty of Dakeng.”

950907- the noon meeting next Monday

Our teacher notified us that those who were selected for the cyberfair had to meet at noon next Monday. She will then tell each of us about the project’s plan and assign our work. From next Monday on, we can not take a nap at noon, but work on our project.

950911-1 sign up as a member on the schools’ web page

We attended the cyberfair’s project training in the computer classroom on the first day. Our teacher asked us to sign up as members on Taiwan schools’ web page so that we could participate the project for the cyberfair. First, we entered our school web page to fill in our personal information. After pressing the icon of  “make sure to sign up,” everyone kept calling “teacher, teacher” for “saving problems.” As everyone had different problems, our teacher was very busy. It took a lot of time to have everyone signed up on the web. After that, our teacher told us to wait for the confirmation letter in our email boxes.

950912-1 a confirmation letter was in the email box

I asked our teacher when I could sign on Taiwan Schools’ web. She then asked me, “Have you got the confirmation letter?” I checked E-mails several times in a day, but I’d never got it. Later I found I could enquiry the letter again from the web. The next day, I was so shocked that I found out a letter in my junk E-mail box. Hence, I hurried to notice the other members to receive the confirmation letter in the junk E-mail box. After trying, everybody made it! Therefore, everybody all formally became members of Taiwan Schools’ web.

950912-2 learn Excel to take attendance

The vice team leader, Yiling Ke, and I had the first mission, which was to learn Excel to complete the records and to take attendance. We had to take roll-call and record our research time, including our teacher’s, each time. Our teacher taught us to use Excel’s formula to count our total hours automatically and all of them would then be saved in the file. Each of us had to record our own records until the end of the project. It will be a little tiring.

950912-3 my new discovery-Microsoft Work can help us count the words.

We were going to sign up 2007 Taiwan Schools Cyberfair. Before it, we needed to confirm our topic, participants and “project description” and “local description.” After our teacher explained the differences of these two descriptions, we tried to write them.

She reminded us not to write too much, approximately two or three hundred words, but to write the main point. While we were counting the words, she noticed it. She told us, “ You don’t need to count the words by yourselves. In fact, MS Word can help us. Just go to the tool icon in Word and click the “ word counting” , and then MS Word will help you count the words.” It was so amazing. What a useful tool! We learnt one more function about Word.

Today our teacher asked me to integrate everybody’s articles of “project description” and “local description.” And I was told it was an important mission. As we needed to hand in these two articles when we signed up the cyberfair. I went the extra mile to complete these two articles. After our teacher checked them, we signed up!

950915-1 Surfed the net to look for the information.

In order to have a better understanding of Dakeng, we started working on searching the information. At the beginning, we were all confused with the topic of our project, “Nourish Touke, Grace Dakeng.” To clarify what Touke means, I surfed the net to look for the information about Touke. Touke Mountain is on the border of Taichung City and Xinshe County. It is in the most east of Taichung City in Dakeng Scenic Area. Touke is the highest mountain in Taichung City with 859 meters high. No wonder teacher Wang would take “Touke” to be our project’s name. Now I knew about Dakeng more.

Our teacher hoped that we could learn from our senior schoolmates and get into the mindset as soon as possible, so she let us appreciate the previous works. I found that the contents of the previous projects were so diverse in which there were elaborate picture scripts, pleasant music and graceful phrases. All impressed me a lot. After we saw the work, all of us have made up our mind to win the first prize this time. At the moment, I want to be number 1!

Today our teacher asked us to appreciate the previous work. After seeing it, I found that good work has plenty of contents and attract people to see it. The topic must be  the point and arouse others’ interests. Hence, I have started improving our writing abilities and made the introduction of our web more complete and more charming.

950915-4 Learn creative ideas from our senior schoolmates and create new ones.

I didn’t know how many creative ideas our senior schoolmates had until I saw their great work. I could only gaze steadily at the work and sigh with surprise. I noticed that their interviews were so detailed and abundant. It was amazing that the picture scripts matched the articles and added associated creativity. I need to watch more TV, read more books and consult with teachers and classmates more, then I will have much more creative ideas to make our web page more charming!

950915-5 Learn creative ideas from our senior schoolmates and create new ones.

After seeing previous work, I found that their pictures were great, especially the maps. They could be understood fully with a glance. People can clearly understand the marks on the maps. The small pictures also matched their project. They were very elaborate and cute as if we were reading a storybook. The contents were plentiful as well. I got lots of ideas. I said to myself ‘I must win.’ Let us go for it. Let us do the work we are in charge of to make a winning effort for our team!

 950915-6 It has been even harder to believe the previous work.

Our teacher let us see the previous works from our senior schoolmates. They really broadened my vision. The layouts were beautiful and the articles were written and insightful. It’s really cool. No wonder they won the prize. But what I admired most was that they described the daily activity on their web page in a most manner. It was indeed worth seeing. I hope we can also make an amazing web page just like these former members at the cyberfair did.

950915-7 The train station with a long history.

After reviewing the previous work of our senior schoolmates, I learned that Taichung train station is more than one hundred years old.  There were many lively pictures and touching music on the web page. Furthermore, our senior schoolmates interviewed elderly people and recorded their lives in great detail. I felt as if I was there. No wonder they won the first prize. As senior schoolmates, I hope we can do a detailed presentation as elaborate as the senior schoolmates did.

After appreciating the elaborate work of our senior schoolmates, I gained a preliminary understanding of making a web page. I realized why our senior schoolmates could win the prizes! Relative to web design, I like using rivers as templates. The way they flow is a blessing to us all. In a word, it is “hou-sai-lei,” which means excellent in Cantonese. I hope we can be as excellent as our senior schoolmates were and win the prize.

950915-9 Appreciating our senior schoolmates’ previous work and learning from them.

After seeing our senior schoolmates’ work, I learned a lot from them. In order to truly understand ‘water,’ for example, our senior schoolmates attended many activities and went to a river to examine its quality and life force. Although they got dirty and tired, they still felt that was worthwhile. Afterwards, we attended many kinds of activities about Dakeng.  I hope that I can experience many different things that are not learned at school.

950918-1 Sign up in the cyber fair.

When we signed up for the cyber fair, we needed a team name, a project title, a local description, a project description, a team’s account and a password. After discussing these things, we included everybody’s creative ideas and we named our team—The Dakeng  Tour Guides. Our project’s title came from a great Chinese master at our school, Teacher Wang. All of the contents of our project came from our individual efforts. I indeed hope that our team can successfully pass our examinations.

950920 Enquiry the numbers who will attend Baozhilin activity

The time for “Discover Baozhilin—an environmental protection campaign for developing a model park” was unexpectedly set for Saturday. I began to worry! I had to go to cram school on that day and on Sunday I had to attend trash picking . I could only choose between one of them. After enquiring, I found that other members of our team had the same problem. Afterwards, we asked our parents and decided to go to Baozhilin activity. Nine people in total signed up. There were two teachers, one parent and six students. There were only four people, including two parents and two students, to sign up for trash picking

950922-2 Discuss the framework of our web page

We had to discuss the framework of our web page. I really could not think of any attractive topic. So I had to write a draft first and then to think of the other parts. Firstly, our teacher asked me to set up our subject “Nourish Touke, Grace Dakeng” on the computer as index.htm. Then I had to open a new document and type the main titles, which included listening to me, Touke ecology, Grace Dakeng etc. There were many more!  In addition, there were many sub-topics for these main topics. We had to think of better names for these topics. Although we had been racking our brains, we had a lot of fun. Finally we set up our framework. After our teacher taught me how to set up the framework, I learned a lot!

950925 Teach the members to deal with the pictures.

Today we needed to deal with the pictures. Firstly, I needed to open Photo Impact. Then, opened the pictures’ file. Finally we needed to decide the trimming parts for the pictures. We kept adjusting the brightness of the pictures but failed to make it good. Because it was terrible when we took a picture, each picture looked dark. So it was difficult to deal with them. Our teacher eventually decided to take a picture again. Having this experience, I found that that we have to take account of the weather and brightness when we take pictures, or the pictures would look too dark or too bright.

950926-1 Sign up for the cyberfair successfully

Bravo! After each one’s effort, we finished naming our team, project name, local description and project’s description and sign up for the cyberfair successfully. We set up our team’s account and password as well.

After the setting, we were waiting for the reply from the host organization. Today teacher Cai said he received the letter from the host organization and confirmed that our team was on the list. The current state for our team was green which meant our team has already passed from the examiners at the stage of signing up. Now we needed to study harder and sent our progress report out regularly. We needed to do our work well and make the web page more brilliant.

950926-2 Send photos to Taiwan School’s website.

Today our teacher asked me to send photos. Firstly, I needed to adjust the brightness of the pictures. She said the pictures could be sent all at once if the capacity is below 50kb and the width lower than 350 pixels. The teacher taught me how to set the image with to 320*240 pixels. Furthermore, I needed to enlarge the framework. I enlarged 20 millimeter of the bottom fringe so that we could type the titles of the pictures. The teacher said many things but I didn’t understand it. I had to ask for the senior schoolmates’ help to adjust the size of the pictures. I was still unsure of the complicated steps. They really beat me! Finally I was going to send our pictures! We had to sign into Taiwan School website first and then sent our adjusted pictures to complete the task! Take a look at my work carefully. Oh! What a good accomplishment!

950926-3 Start to send the progress report

Today our teacher asked the vice team leader and me to send the progress report. At the beginning, I felt it would be easy. Unexpectedly, it got more and more complicated. I still needed to record our research time. Surprisingly, I did not understand after the teacher finished her speech. Even with the teacher’s patient teaching, I still barely understood a few sentences. Alas! I was really not sure if I was competent to do my work. Finally I got into the cyberfair’s website after I learned how to do it.

950927-1 Decide the numbers, name the team and then sign up for the Baozhilin activity.

 We finally decided the people would be attending the Baozhilin activity after enquiring. There were in total nine people, including two teachers. Next, we needed to choose the team we attended. Team A was called Secret Base, based on the materials such as wood, cloth and earthenware pipes. Team B was called Moving Castle, based on the materials such as castles, guards and forest made of cardboard and newspaper. Team C was called Cute Zoo, based on the materials such as wood of domestic animals and insects. Team D was called Bulaimei Band, based on the materials of cardboard of all kinds of environmental protection’s sets of musical instruments. Team E was called Painting My House-Artistic Environmental Protection Commemoration Park, Baozhilin. After reading these team names, some people liked to attend Team Ca and others liked Team B. Finally we decided by voting. Team B, Moving Castle, won the majority. Our teacher was going to sign up for us. Everyone was looking forward to it!

950927-2 Collect questions and prepare questions of Baozhilin.

  We were going to Baozhilin on Saturday. Today we surfed the net to look for some information on Baozhilin. After browsing the web pages of Baozhilin, we needed to find questions to ask the staff there. The leader needed to organize the questions. One person was in charge of two questions. After we put the questions to vote, we chose the following questions: (1) Why was Baozhilin originally built? (2) Baozhilin looks so huge. How big it is? (3) What are the sources of the land? (4) Can people bring the recycling to Baozhilin by themselves? (5) When was Baozhilin built?

950928-1 The sending of the progress report was delayed because of the jam in the cyberfair website.

Finally we had time to send our progress report to the cyberfair website. Firstly, we got into the website and then keyed in the account and password. Oops! How cam it showed “the web page can not be linked?” Oh, my goodness! I hardly had time to send the progress report. Later my teacher asked me to try again, but I still couldn’t get into the cyberfair. Alas! It seemed that the original plan for sending progress report would be in vain.

950928-2 Deal with the picture’s image.

Today our teacher taught us how to deal with the picture’s image. I had to send our team’s picture to the cyberfair. She told us to use many functions. Firstly, we had to find our pictures, adjust the picture’s brightness and size and then add beautiful 3D framework. When we wanted to save our picture, we found that the file was bigger than 5 kb. So we had to increase the zip rate and decrease quality. Finally we adjusted the file to the right size. Thank goodness for helping!

950929 I could only attend the hill-cleaning activity.

 As soon as our computer teacher came into the computer classroom, she asked us whether Zihsing Huang and I attended the trash picking activity or not for the last chance. Yajhu Huoriginally went trash picking but she was more interested in Baozhilin activity. Therefore, she conquered many obstacles to adjusting the schedule of the cram school for attending Baozhilin activity. As it was very important to experience about the cyber fair activity by ourselves, our teacher insisted we could only chose one between them. If we had no experience about the cyber fair activity, how could we present it on our web page? Therefore, we answered we could on attend the hill-cleaning activity quickly. Finally we asked the teacher what the trash picking  was. She answered it meant picking the trash. After hearing that, I spoke to the teacher that if I could exchange the activity. “You just accept fate. “She replied.
