Children are the most beautiful angels in the world Their “innocent” and “persistence” let us feel the world's beauty.
When Father Wim Bollew of CICM of Belgium was appointed the parochial vicar of the Catholic Church on Shuang-Shih Road, he met “the disabled angel “for the first time. He felt shocked and arouse his love and kindness. Father Bollew was so shocked that mental or physical disable children were isolated and neglected at home during the learning critical period. In order to let those special children be able to receive good education like normal children, Yu Jen Catholic Elementary School Affiliated Special Class which was the first elementary affiliated special class in Taichung established in August, 1971. The class enrolls mentally disable children and located in Catholics Church on the Shuang-Shih Road. Sister Chen, Yu-Ping was the director of the class. However, because special classes were not well-known, Sisters were trying to persuade parents to let their children with mental problem to study in our special classes. Those mental and physical conditions of students were not good at that time, and it was thanks to Sister Yu-Ping's practical training experience in Taipei Kuang-Jen Elementary School and her passion that Yu Jen Elementary School Affiliated Special Class became the forerunner of special class in Taichung. Therefore, making lesson plans was especially difficult and challenging, such as editing textbooks and making teaching materials. Although preparation and engagement of the special class were difficult and frustrating, we made great efforts. The special class was renamed as “Special Education Center of Yu Jen Elementary School” in 2000. Everyone takes care of those children with love and patience and hopes they can grow up happily and successfully, so we have a nickname for the special education center—Class Ai “Class Love.”

The goal and purpose of Class Love |
|
|
If you stay at home, everything will be difficult. If you go out, there will be a way for you. Although those children have different kind of disabilities, including cerebral palsy, autism, mental retardation, Down syndrome, and mental disorder. We need to teach them repeatedly because their learning ability is slow, reaction is slow. Although they have some disabilities, they can learn and need to be taught by appropriated teaching approaches. Through being taught appropriately, they can engage in simple work and can do well. It is Class Love's mission to offer children with mental or physical retardation a good learning environment. We also hope that these children can learn self-care skills with our love and concern and hope that we can lead them to join others and walk on their own ways. |

In 1971 |
Yu Jen Catholic Elementary School Affiliated Special Class established. Enroll students with mental problems and teach them in terms of special education. The class is located in the Catholic Church on Da-Ya Road. Sister Helen Chen, Yu-Pin was the first director of Class Love. Enroll 6 students in the class. |

In 1972 |
Move to the Catholic Church on Shuang-Shih Road, the enrolment has climbed to 12. |

The second special class established. |

In 1975 |
Special classes held the first life camp outside the school in order to strength students’ self-care skills. |

The third special class established. |

In 1980 |
Sister Helen Chen, Yu-Pin was assigned to other division. Sister Huang, Shu-Chen was appointed the director of Class Love. |

In 1982 |
Catholic Church expended its third floor and added three classrooms in order to let students have enough space. |

In 1988 |
Integrated education started. Elementary department and special class joined events together in order to let normal students learn how to accept students with mental problems. |

In 1991 |
Life education classroom established, located in the Catholic Church on the Shuang-Shih Road. The classroom is the place to train students’ self-care skills. |

Special classes started to implement individualized education program. |

In 1993 |
Father of CICM of Belgium and the founder of special class—Father Wim Bollew came to visit from Outer Mongolia. |

Sister Chang, Hua-Fan was appointed the director of special class. |

In 1997 |
The Sacred Heart of Jesus Training Center for the Hearing Impaired changed to be Yu Jen Catholic Elementary School Affiliated Preschool Hearing Impaired Class and arranged preschool hearing impaired children to learn with students in our kindergarten for 4 weeks. |

Because of reconstruction of the Church, special classes moved to No. 136, Guang-Fu Road. |

Preschool special class established. |

Sister Lee, Chun-Lan was appointed the director of special class. |

In 2000 |
Expansion of the campus was done and special classes moved back to Yu Jen campus and named Yu Jen Elementary Special Education Center. |

Family-like Life classroom established on the fifth floor of Special Education Center and Cheng, Hsiu-Chih was appointed the leader of the center. |

All facilities were computerized. Set up a computer in each classroom. |

Sensory Integration Classroom established on underground 2nd floor of Group Building in order to help more students with mental or physical problems to rehabilitate and treat. |

Set up more audio visual equipment and projectors. |

In 2006 |
Preschool Hearing Impaired Class renamed Preschool Non-Classified Resources Class. |

In 2007 |
Cheng, Hsiu-Chih was appointed the director of special class. |

The first private elementary school affiliated special education center in Taichung City |

Special Education Center of Yu Jen Elementary School is the first private elementary school affiliated special education center. Through faculty's efforts for 30 years, the program is successful and also is received award of excellence. Moreover, our school is one of elementary setting up preschool special classes. There are three special classes for elementary department, one preschool special class, and one preschool non-classified resources class. The director of special classes Cheng, Hsiu-Chih, guides an officer, a life-care officer, and seven special education teachers to serve Class Love. |

Based on life education courses, the center adopts open teaching method and implements integrated teaching. According to Unit Teaching method, teaching activity is proceeding in games. |
