In order to understand the twelve beautiful scenes of Yu Jen, today we invite principal Shih to introduce us the characteristics, function, and use of each scene.

Activity Strategy:

    a. Go to investigate every scenes in advance

    b. Plan the tour line

    c. Ask the principal how to guide a campus tour

    d. Understand the twelve scenes of Yu Jen

Activity Benefit:

    a. Let each member has a deeper understanding of the twelve scenes of Yu Jen

    b. Let each member learn how to guide a tour and prepare for campus tours for
    ¡@freshmen

Activity Schedule:

We have to estimate how much time we are going to spend in each scenes and cannot stay in a scenestoo long. We also have to remember all the characteristics of each scene clearly and let every member understand each scene deeply. Therefore, we can make use of the information while doing other activity. We estimated that it will take one and half hour to complete a tour of the twelve scenes.

Make an appointment with the principal:

This time we want to invite our principal to guide a campus tour for us because our principal is the most experienced person in the school. We think that she must understand everything of Yu Jen. However, our principal is very busy and finally we set up a schedule with her.

Start to guide:

The principal is very good at introducing those scenes and she does not need any preparation because she involved in designing the new building and provided many opinions. From her fabulous introduction of each scene, we know that she made much effort on building the new building. Therefore, everyone must listen to the principal's presentation, and we can absorb her precious knowledge.

Arrange data after the tour:

After guiding by the principal, we have to arrange data and write down the important points. Moreover, we have to start to practice the skills of being a tour guide and distribute each scene in order to let campus tours for freshmen go well.

Distribute Scenes:

Because we have twelve people in our team and there are twelve scenes, every person has to introduce one scene while campus tours for freshmen. Everyone has to remember the most important characteristics of each scene to tell other students.

Principal guided the campus tour for us

Endless and continuous love (Jesus Garden)

First, our principal brought us to the first scene¡XJesus Garden. It established in June, 2007, and is a place which can clean people's mind. Principal said, ¡§This year is Yu Jen 40th Anniversary, in order to let graduates leave a beautiful memory, so I asked workers to finish before students graduate in June. The Jesus Statue in the middle of the garden points his heart with both hands. It represents Sacred Heart of Jesus. There are two water wheels which keep turning. It indicates that time flies and also parents¡¦ love won't stop. Fathers¡¦ and mothers¡¦ love reflect the love of Sacred Heart of Jesus. Because he points his heart, I asked an artist to draw the shape of heart. He loves every child and let children can love themselves, others, environment, the world, and everything. Jesus Garden is the source of love, and when students come to here, they can pray ¡¥Jesus, please let my heart be like your heart which can confirm myself and love others.¡¦ ¡¨

Learn from bamboo to be modest and humble while studying

After introducing the important statue, principal asked us, ¡§Do you know what bamboos over there represent for? Bamboo is my favorite plant.¡¨ We had many guesses and finally principal told us the correct answer, ¡§Because many students like to jump from the stairs and it is very dangerous. Then I was thinking what plant can be appreciated by students and also safe? Finally, I thought of bamboo.¡¨ Principal asked, ¡§Do you know if bamboo is solid or hallow?¡¨ The question is so simple and we all know what the answer is. We answered, ¡§It is hallow.¡¨ Then she asked us, ¡§Why is bamboo hallow?¡¨ It is too difficult for us. And she said, ¡§If the heart is full, you won't accept others¡¦ suggestions. If the heart is hallow, you will get space to put things and will be humble. Therefore, you need to learn from bamboo, and think that you are not full yet. Then you will be humble and keep learning. If your heart is full, you will think that you are good enough and won't have a chance to learn.¡¨ Now I know that every scene has its own meaning while being designed.

The colored pillars represent four seasons

After introducing Jesus Garden, we arrived at the indoor playground in the Group Building. We saw four pillars in four colors after entering the building, and principal asked us to walk around those pillars to see if there are differences among pillars. We did not notice that each pillar is in different color until now¡Xnamely, the first one is green, second one is gold, the third one is reddish, the fourth one is white. Principal said, ¡§The four pillars represent four seasons¡Xnamely, green represents the growing shoots in the spring, gold represents the sun in the summer, reddish represents the mature fruit in the fall, and white represents snow in the winter.¡¨

¡§What color do you see in those pillars?¡¨ principal asked.

We said what we saw, ¡§Red, orange, yellow, green, blue, indigo, and purple.¡¨ Wow, those are colors of the rainbow. ¡§Why is the rainbow painted on the pillars?¡¨ We have no idea. Principal said, ¡§Look, each scene of the indoor playground is about Nature including four seasons and rainbow. I want students to love Nature. Don't you feel very comfortable while standing here? Where does the wind come from? Please take a look at the wall. There are many holes on the wall. Why are those holes on the wall? Because it can let the wind blow in, students will feel happy while they are learning. Although there are holes on the wall, rains won't come in because the architect is very excellent and he made eaves for those holes.¡¨

There are many holes on the wall

Each pillar represents different season

The promise made under the rainbow

After talking about the holes on the wall, we have to come back to our subject. Principal kept introducing the rainbow, ¡§There is a song called ¡§The promise made under the rainbow. The rainbow on each pillar has the same meaning. Many ten thousands years ago, humans were great. However, they did many bad things, so God felt angry and made the sky rain for 40 days. All animals had no idea what to do and they were going to die. Then God said to Noah, ¡¥You have to bring a pair of each animal to your boat.¡¦ After the bad people left, Noah let a bird go out and the bird came back very soon, so he knew that the water was still full. The second time Noah let it out again, it left for a while but finally came back, so Noah knew that the water was still full. The third time, the bird left for a long time and came back with a leave. If there was a plant, it represented that the water was gone. Therefore, Noah knew it's time to go off the boat. Before he left the boat, there was a rainbow. God told Noah, ¡¥You have to love humans and those animals. If you keep proliferate like this and create a wonderful world with peace and love each other, I promise under the rainbow that I won't destroy the world again.¡¦ ¡¨

We were all attracted by the story.

After listening to the story, principal asked, ¡§The reason which I wanted to build the pillars with rainbows here is that I want to make a promise with you. If you study hard and make use of all facilities in the school, your learning will be successful. This is the promise made under the rainbow.¡¨

Everyone was examining the differences of each pillars

Know the four letters ¡§W, S, N, E¡¨ which are common signs used by the world

We came to a scene which looked like a big compass and we all looked forward to knowing the compass. Principal said, ¡§First, what is the place we stand?¡¨ We looked for a letter, ¡§It is E. East.¡¨ Principal satisfied the answer and kept asking, ¡§And what about the other three?¡¨ We answered, ¡§West, South, and North¡¨ Then Principal asked us from different aspect, ¡§Which direction is Tainan, Taipei, respectively?¡¨ We pointed N and said, ¡§Taipei is in the North, and the opposite one is Tainan.¡¨

Principal said, ¡§At that time when the architect designed the place, I told him that our students are facing the whole world, so they must have the sense of direction. It is too difficult to write on Chinese character, so I thought that because our students have started to learn English, so the four letters were adopted. Because if you go to country and do not know where you are, you will be able to use the four letters to ask the direction. Once I travelled to Canada and someone asked me what the W means. Then I told her it is the direction of West. Therefore, I want my students to know ¡¥W, S, N, E¡¦ which are common signs in the world. But why we put a compass here? Because the function of compass is to get us direction and it is also relative to W, S, N, E, we put compass and W, S, N, E together.¡¨

It looks like a big circle

We were discussing the meaning of N

The unique cornerstone

After introducing the Compass, we came to the Cornerstone. Principal asked us to see the date engraved on the Cornerstone. Because the words on the stone are very small, we all narrowed our eyes to take a look at the stone and answered, ¡§March 25th, 2000.¡¨ Then principal started to introduce, ¡§When I visited to other schools, I found that most of cornerstones are hung on the wall, so I thought: will the cornerstone of our school be hung on the wall? After discussing with several teachers, we decided to put the cornerstone alone. We put it in the garden. Then we started to look for the stone and I found my university classmate's husband who is the principal of Taichung Industrial High School likes to collect stones, so I told him that I need a stone. And he asked, ¡¥What kind of use?¡¦ I said, ¡¥I want to erect it in the garden for our students.¡¦ Principal Tseng said, ¡¥You find the right person because there are many stones in our school. Because you and my wife are friends, I will send a unique stone to Yu Jen Elementary School.¡¦ Then he let me see his favorite stone which is our cornerstone now. Because his child was my student while I was the principal of GuangJen Elementary School, he said that it is good way to thank me for teaching his child. Principal Tseng not only sent us the big stone but also found a professional artist to engrave words. He said, ¡¥Because the stone is very good, it needs a good artist to engrave words on it to present its beauty.¡¦¡¨

Principal also told us, the stone is natural and asked the artist to engrave words on the even side. Then principal asked us, ¡§What date is Jesus¡¦ birthday?¡¨ We answered, ¡§December 25th¡¨ Principal said, ¡§What is the date before nine months ago?¡¨ We answered, ¡§March 25th¡¨ Principal said, ¡§Correct, it was written in the Bible. One day an angel came to inform Virgin Mary, ¡¥You will be the mother of Jesus on March 25th. ¡¦ Therefore, we asked the artist to engrave the date on the stone.¡¨

It is a wonderful thing to share feeling with others

When I studied abroad, I often saw many murals in the country I studied, so I wanted to have a mural on our new building. I found a Mexican artist Franses Boboa and invited him to design for our school. He asked me, ¡§What do you want?¡¨ I wanted the mural showing the paragraph in the Bible describing Jesus likes children very much and he always blesses them. Then he drew 20 painting to let me choose and I chose the one which has dogs, cats, balls, flowers and children playing on the lawn. I thought, ¡§Should I put this beautiful painting outside or inside the school?¡¨ After discussing with several teachers and Sisters, we all thought our students would like to share with others, so we put the painting outside.

The big mural of Let Children Come to Me

Students can see the mural every morning and people who walk on the green parkway can see too. After I decided the painting, Boboa chose several people with mental problems to classify the colors of mosaic. After finishing classification, they mailed those mosaics to Taiwan from Macau. He said he must be very careful while sticking mosaics on the wall. He asked me to look for the best cement worker with professional skills by making use of cement with intensive stickiness. The mural is very high and huge, so I found the cement professional who has worked for 35 years. When he was working, he said, ¡§I need to stop and take a deep breath because the mural is too beautiful. I never saw a mural like this.¡¨ Then Mr. Boboa asked him to drink a tea and take a rest. But he said, ¡§No, I want to complete the mural as soon as possible because I want to see the whole work.¡¨ And he told Mr. Boboa, ¡§If you have other works, I can work for you because working on your design is an enjoyment not a work.¡¨ So you need to know that even if a worker can appreciate a good work. When they enjoy appreciating the beautiful things, they will feel happy and satisfied in work. It is a wonderful thing to share the beautiful mural Let Children Come to Me with others by putting it outside the campus.

Children's  Chapel¡XChing-Hsin Hall

Church is a very important place for a Catholic school. Our school designed a church for children. When you stand on the stage, you will see Jesus being nailed on the cross on the wall. Then we can look up to the Jesus statue and see a very beautiful painting which represents on Christmas Eve, angels are paying respect to Holy infant and two children are praying. Jesus in the painting is a good light. This painting lets people feel warm. This painting is designed for our students. Colored windows painted on candles with green lights, but why are the lights not red? Principal said, ¡§The color is chosen by the artist and he already showed the meaning that I want to present.¡¨ There are some windows painted on doves. Dove refers to peace and Holy Spirit (holy God) who gives people wisdom like God. The windows close to the entrance painted on Virgin Mary and white lily. She is Jesus¡¦ mother and the white lily represents her love to humans. There are several statues describing the fourteen Stations of the Cross which was the process of Jesus¡¦ dedication. Children are always Jesus¡¦ favorite. Our church has two names, one is Children Church which means the church is for Children, and the other one is Ching-Hsin Hall which means the place can let children's mind keep calm. The quiet and sacred church is the place for children to pray. Jesus loves children. If you never come to here to pray, you need to come and pray and Jesus will give you three graces.

A growing Jesus Tree

We can see the beautiful pillar in the patio of the first floor, and principal said, ¡§The pillar represents a growing tree, Jesus Tree. There are several colors on the tree and those colors represent fruits of the tree. You will learn three primary colors in art class and those different colors on the tree can let you learn how to match colors. Students¡¦ paintings are natural because they always look natural colors.¡¨

There are six characters on the tree¡Xmoral, intellectual, physical, social, aesthetic and sacred education. And on the top of the tree, there is a world map which is designed for sixth grade students. By making use of design, the pillar is not only a tree but also a pillar pointing to the sky. If you looking in the direction of Jesus Tree, you will find that a Roman style breezeway surrounds Ching-Hsin Hall. You also can see the scene from the patio.

Students live with passion and learn happily. There is fire (passion) in their heart

Then we went down from the stairs of the patio to underground auditorium. Principal said, ¡§Every day when sunshine arrives here at eleven o'clock, the sun will cast a shadow onto the place. You can see the Hope Hall of our school. Go down the stairs to the underground, and you will see many paintings on the wall and a line from Bible ¡¥I am the road, truth, and life.¡¦ The landmark of the Hope Hall is the shadow of Jesus Tree. There is auditorium. Everyone has his own life and everyone has to live a meaningful life. Therefore, we have to follow Jesus to find the truth. The wall along with the stairs is painted on children who are playing, dancing, and learning. Those paintings are in accordance with the six educations on the tree¡Xmoral, intellectual, physical, social, aesthetic and sacred education. The right side of the wall represents that on March 25th, Virgin Mary was informed by Jesus that she will give birth to Jesus on the day. And the fire represents Holy God who wants children to live with passion and learn happily. It is important to have fire (passion).¡¨

Overlook the view and cheer up

Principal said, ¡§The distance between classrooms and nature science classrooms is a little far for students, so we built the bridge to connect True Building and Beauty Building¡XSkywalk. Bridge can be simple and also can be meaningful. We will decorate the bridge during Halloween and Christmas with flyers and decorators. During art exhibition, works can be display on the bridge. We can see the most beautiful scene on the bridge¡Xnamely, we can see Jesus Tree more clearly, see the whole row of coconut palms in front of the old school gate, and see the Fatima Church opposite to our school. At the moment, your mood must be good and looking into distant scene is helpful to our eyesight.

The great place for overlooking¡Xskywalk

When you drink water, you should think about its origin.¡XOur origin (The Terrace of
       Thanksgiving
)

We arrived at the fourth floor and principal said, ¡§There is an indoor auditorium in the underground of the building. It is of course that we need a outdoor place for performance. The place is a memorial to our founder Rev. Stuck Ivo. Therefore, the place called Stuck Ivo Hall, the open air performance stage. Do you see the special LOGO on the wall? In the LOGO, there are Virgin Mary holding little Jesus and twelve stars surrounding a heart, which represents Congregation of the Immaculate Heart of Mary (CICM). Words around the LOGO are Latin words meaning one mind one spirit¡Xnamely, the main spirit is serving others. When several Fathers preached in Inner Mongolia in China, people there were suffering from fever and 265 Fathers at the age of 30-40 died there. They went to biology department in a university to search for medicine and then they made the medicine from goats¡¦ blood. After success, a lot of Fathers can preach in China safely and then came to Taiwan. Their dedication is great, so we cannot forget them. Therefore, we put the LOGO of CICM here.¡¨

Open-minded, passionate, learn happily¡XThe Observatory on the fifth floor

Principal said, ¡§Here is the place to view scenes.¡¨

Then principal guided us to the arc hallway between True Building and Kind Building and said, ¡§You will find Our Origin and Millennium Benchmarks are so beautiful from here. As seeing from here, you will see Jesus Tree, Roman style corridor, patio, coconut palms clearly. You also can see True Building, Kind Building, Beauty Building, and Group Building from here. Beautiful scenes of Yu Jen can be seen from here. This makes you open-minded and makes you want to work

hard while learning. Therefore, you have to live with passion and learn happily. The great environment is waiting for your use.¡¨

The revolution of the seasons and go forward to the world

After introducing the Observatory on the fifth floor, principal guided us to the Millennium Landmarks on the sixth floor and said, ¡§How many pillars did you see?¡¨ We answered, ¡§Four.¡¨ Principal said, ¡§Correct, those four pillars extend from here to Group Building.¡¨ And she pointed the four pillars and said, ¡§These are Spring, Summer, Fall, and Winter, respectively. Although the top of each pillar looks a little different because each one

Stand beside the
Millennium Landmarks; let's move forward to the world

was made by different person, the meaning of each one is the same. Then principal kept saying, ¡§This place is on the top of the highest building of our school, so we called them Millennium Landmarks¡Xthat is, our school established in 2000. At that time, the people in the world worried millennium computer date problem because computer program would fail to change 1999 to 2000. People worried that their data would miss. Moreover, the Millennium Landmarks mean not only the revolution of the seasons but also going forward to the world until next century.¡¨ We are going to go forward to the third millennium. Moreover, Pope told us that all Catholics have to make efforts until the third millennium. At that time, I think that we all need to work hard until the fourth millennium as well. The idea of these four benchmarks is based on second millennium. Principal stopped and then said, ¡§Does anyone know the meaning of the little holes on the wall? Those holes represent the tree grows a lot of fruits. And the lines under the corridors represent lights shining everywhere. All designs of the architecture combine with the Nature.¡¨
